How to Build an AI Governance Framework for a Small Team

Most AI governance frameworks are written for enterprises. They assume dedicated compliance officers, legal teams, and multi-quarter implementation timelines. This guide is different — it's built for a team of 5 to 50 people who need governance that actually gets done.

What a small-team framework needs to do

A framework does not need to cover every scenario. It needs to:

  1. Prevent the most common and costly mistakes
  2. Create a clear path for employees when they are unsure
  3. Satisfy baseline regulatory requirements (GDPR, sector-specific rules)
  4. Scale as the team and AI usage grows

Everything else is optional until it becomes necessary.

The five components

1. AI use-case inventory

What it is: A living list of every AI tool your team uses, what it is used for, and what data it touches.
